There have been many posts/articles/blogs about the tragic situation in Ireland this week. Some extremely self-righteous unfounded accusations of Priests, Pope Francis, the Catholic Church not doing enough as far as speaking out about abortion. My hope was renewed when several offered well-thought out polite rebuttals to those accusations. The best was those that asked accusers what actions they themselves were taking to end this tragedy. Just shaking our heads and maybe even shedding a tear is not enough. Throwing insults and accusations not only does not help the cause, it endangers it – if so-called Christians cannot even respect post-born people, how can we ever obtain respect for the pre-born, elderly, and infirmed.
But those were not what struck my very heart this morning. What had my heart totally broken for this world was a response to a post that simply said: It is so sad what happened in Ireland. A young female responded:
“Or a step out of the dark ages”
It in incomprehensible to me that someone thinks that setting the stage to make it legal to kill our own children is a step OUT of the dark… the definition of dark is “with little or no light”. The only light I see in it is the flames coming from the fires of Hell.
As another friend put it “The darkest moments in history have all had one thing in common – they were marked by the belief that certain members of our human family were “less than”.” To paraphrase the rest of her comment: And since they are “less than”, it is acceptable and legal to commit acts of violence against them even to the actual killing of those who “do not matter”.
In our own country, the most significant increase in violence, anarchy, disrespect for authority, the “me” generation, all began when our judicial system decided that some people have more rights than others including the right to live. Whether you want to accept that description of Roe vs Wade or not, that is exactly what it was.
All I can say is, if the age of enlightenment means that people have the right to decide who lives and who dies based status in life (pre-born, elderly, infirmed, etc.) then plunge me into your definition of darkness. I would rather live in that “world defined” darkness so that in the future I can live in the heavenly light.
