I have been praying a lot regarding humility… begging for the virtue itself, but also trying to understand how do I practice it in every day life. There are a lot of opinions of how both man and God define humility or what it means to be humble.
Every time I either pray the Rosary or contemplate the Joyful Mysteries, I marvel at the fact that Jesus humbled Himself to take on our flesh. Many people contemplate His Passion, Death and Resurrection, but how many of us seriously think about what lead up to that point? He was in Heaven , with a Heavenly body, no pain, no weakness, no hassles from others. One with the Father and Holy Spirit, sitting on His throne. He gave all that up to take on our frailties, our “human form”.
I started thinking – could I even do that part? At first, I was like – well, I really can’t even think of anything even close. After all, I am already nothing, a miserable sinner and wretch. There would be nothing for me to give up to lower myself.
But then the thought crossed my mind – what if God came to me and asked, “Are you willing to humble yourself in order to relieve the pain and abuse of the animals on earth? If you say yes, you will be born as a worm. You will be aware that you are human, but you must take on the body of a worm, eat what worms eat, crawl on the ground like worms and act in all ways as a worm, all while having full knowledge that you are a human with dominion over the animals.”
I do not believe I would say yes at this point, so I am amending my prayer. Lord, Grant me the humility to say yes to becoming a worm just as Jesus did.
